Health care and social assistance layoff notices

In the 12 months to October 20, 2026, 10 employers in health care and social assistance filed 19 WARN notices, naming 1,575 workers, and 3 more are filed for a date after that, naming 291 workers. The 12 months before had 11 notices naming 3,120 workers.

These are the employers whose industry we know from the NAICS code on their own H-1B wage filings. Together they filed notices naming 26% of the year's workers, so this page shows part of health care and social assistance, and a count here is a floor.

After a layoff in health care and social assistance

BLS counted 280,000 workers who had held a job in health care and social assistance for three or more years and lost it between January 2023 and December 2025 because a plant or company closed or moved, there was too little work or their position was abolished. That is 8% of all 3.3 million such workers.

In January 2026, 77.1% of them were working again, 14.5% were unemployed and 8.4% were out of the labor force. Across every industry the figures were 66.1%, 18.3% and 15.7%.

These are people who lost a job at an employer of any size, counted in a household survey. A layoff notice lists no worker by name, and neither source says how likely your own job is to end. How this is sourced and what it covers

Source: the open WARN Notice Register, which consolidates the WARN listings that state workforce agencies publish. Our copy is current through October 20, 2026. WARN notices are the advance filings that employers with roughly 100 or more employees send to state agencies before a layoff or closure, typically 60 days ahead. Each entry is a filing: headcounts and dates are as the employer or state recorded them, a notice can later be revised, and a count tracks company size as well as layoffs. An employer is placed in an industry by the NAICS code it writes on its own H-1B wage filings: at least 10 filings between the names it files under, 60% of them in one two-digit sector, and a filing in a state it filed a notice in. A code for the management of companies says how a filer is organized, so it places no one. An employer with no such filings, or one that files under several sectors, has no industry here. 93,872 of the 359,227 workers named in the year, 26%, are in a notice from an employer placed in a listed industry. A listing that repeats an earlier one is counted once, and a notice the register labels is left out of the counts. How to read layoff notice data sets out what the notices can and cannot say and why some are missing. Informational only; not legal, immigration, or financial advice.

LCA filings reflect sponsored-worker wage offers, which skew toward mid-large employers and specific occupations — treat any estimate built from a small sample cautiously.
